“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”

Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Dear one,

Do you have a habit of finishing people’s sentences when they’re talking with you? That habit is actually a sign that you’re not listening to understand, you’re listening to reply. Effective communication requires that we actively listen and take in information before formulating a response, but our subconscious mind can draw us into the story we’re hearing, and we become so invested and involved in what we’re hearing that we lose our patience and try to rush the story along according to the dialogue in our head.

Today I encourage you to work on your listening skills, and pay special attention to whether or not you speak over people.

Never forget that I love you, and that excludes no one.

Love,
