Dear one,

Hey Queerfolk, can we talk for a minute? As we celebrate our PRIDE month, there’s a serious issue that has been around for way too long and I think it’s high time that we stop getting a pass on it. We need to rethink the way we speak.

We need to stop using phrases like “butch it up”, even when we’re making a joke, because toxic masculinity emanating from queer culture is no better than when it is coming from those who hate us.

We need to stop referring to drag queens and female impersonators as “serving fish”. It’s demeaning to women and it’s nothing to be proud of.

We need to stop telling gay men to “embrace their inner lesbian” when they need do something mechanical that might normally be outside their skill set.

We need to stop saying “don’t be a pussy”. It’s sexist, and it’s ridiculous. Vaginas are one of the most strong and resilient parts of a human body. If you want to talk about weakness, let’s talk about balls. They’re overly sensitive, incredibly susceptible to damage, and entirely unregulated.

If we are going to celebrate PRIDE, we need to use language we can be proud of.

Never forget that I love you, and that excludes no one.

Love,
