“Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something.”

Henry David Thoreau

Dear one,

What are you good for? It seems like a harsh question, but my aim is to get you to think critically about yourself and your life. I think we are here for a reason, and that understanding that reason is an important part of experiencing life with fullness and richness.

Thoreau has been an idol of mine forever, and this quote presents a beautiful example of why. How profound is it to say “don’t just be good, be good for something”? The first time I read those words, I was floored by deep meaning hidden in a seemingly simple statement.

I’m not here to be good, I’m here to be good for something. I’m here to leave the world a little better for my existence.

Never forget that I love you, and that excludes no one.

Love,
