So plant your own gardens and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

Jorge Luis Borges

Dear one,

I’d like you to give yourself a gift that will stay with you for the rest of your life. I’d like you to prioritize your happiness.

Nothing can beat us down faster than expectations. Instead of giving our overactive minds the opportunity to drive us mad with tallying all the things people aren’t doing for us, we should plant what we want, and nurture it as it grows.

As someone with a lifelong affinity for gardening, this quote hits me on multiple layers, but the most critical takeaway for me may not be obvious. The act of planting your own gardens is proactive. It prioritizes you. Decorating your own soul is personal and rightly selfish. You don’t decorate your soul so that others will compliment you as though you’d chosen the best shade of lipstick. It’s for you.

Plant your garden with what you want, then tend your garden. Give time and attention to what you hope to cultivate and you will never feel the need to wait for someone to bring you flowers.

Never forget that I love you, and that excludes no one.

Love,
