The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.

Alice Walker

Dear one,

It’s so easy to feel powerless these days. Turn on the news or scroll through your social media feed and there will be an endless barrage of terrible things that are out of your control. The thing is, this is an accidental slight of hand trick that we do to ourselves. We’re so caught up in all the things we can’t control, that we throw our hands up and give up on the things we can.

It may not fuel our desire for immediate gratification, but when something political happens that we don’t like, a productive response is to carefully and strategically plan the best way to make a counter move. In other words, vote. When something terrible happens to people in your community, use your power to mobilize friends and do something.

Stop giving up your power because you’ve been convinced (or you’ve convinced yourself) that you don’t have any. You should be a human doing, not just a human being.

Never forget that I love you, and that excludes no one.

Love,
